Someone recently asked the question “What is the purpose of Life?”, in a forum that I was browsing through.
Essentially, every one of us wants to know the answers to the questions “What is the meaning of life?” and “Why was I born?”. I have had this very same question rise in me more than once. Of course, as with this seeker, I then did not have the answer.
Do I have now? Yes, I believe so.
The problem is that with spirituality, unlike other topics, there are no schools to train you in the subject. It is a subject that you learn all by yourself. At every level, you find somebody who is more knowledgeable than yourself to take you to the next level.
I am reminded here of the quote by french philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” So, in essence, we are all looking for the same thing. Only that some have not yet reached that level of realization that they too are searching.
In my opinion, we are given to undertake two lives in this world, one is the spiritual pursuit and the other one is the material pursuits, or that which is mandatory. The spiritual pursuit is not mandatory and will come in once you have had experiences to hone your soul and impress upon yourself that it is not material success that is your goal.
The life that we lead in this world is a game. We need to play this game fair. If we do not, we will be penalized. Like in any game, there are rules of fair play and there will be referees to ensure that any mistake is penalized. The good thing about this is that we are given many games to play till we master it. That the soul is an evolved one, based on past experiences is explained by the fact while you as a human will think twice about swatting a mosquito that bites you, there is another who will not blink before skinning a poor furry animal alive. Yours is a soul that is spiritually at a doctoral level while the other is still in the kindergarten level.
There are no two thoughts about it. The entire cosmos plays by the rules. Nature always plays by the rules. You know, to understand things better, I try to relate that which I do not understand, to something that I know for sure.
I know for sure that when I throw a ball high up in the air, it will come back with many times the force; the higher it is thrown, the more powerful the comeback. It is the same for our actions.
You throw nails and broken glass above, the result is going to hurt you. Your throw sweet smelling diluted natural oils above, you will definitely be rewarded with a sweet smelling persona later.
So, the purpose of life is to go ahead with your life as it is, while pursuing your spiritual search simultaneously. It is not about religion. Religion is only a means to your goal. It is not the goal.
You can be spiritual without being affiliated to any religion. Doing good deeds like making someone happy is spiritual. Not hurting anyone in thought or deed is impossible probably, but we should instantly try and seek forgiveness with the soul of the person whom we hurt, intentionally or unintentionally. The focus should be to reduce such incidences over a period of time, till a time comes that not hurting others has become a habit of ours.
When we keep doing such good deeds, ensuring that the good deeds are more than the bad deeds, a time will come when a guide will find us and take us through to the next level.
Till that time, we toil, ceaselessly.
