Godavari Pushkaralu 2015

Godavari originates at Triumbakam, Nasik district of Maharastra State and flows through southern state of Andhra Pradesh and reaches the Bay of Bengal.

Godavari is one of the holy rivers of India, which has its origins at Triumbakam or Trayambakam or Trimbak town in Nashik district of the state of Maharastra. It flows through Andhra Pradesh and culminates at the Bay of Bengal. Kushavarta, a kund is symbolically considered the origin of the Godavari river and is a revered and sacred bathing place for the spiritually inclined.

Godavari Pushkaralu is a festival of river Godavari. This festival is celebrated once in 12 years. The pushkaram festival was previously held in the year 2003. This year, Godavari Pushkaram will fall in July. This year pushkaram is called Maha Kumbhamela. Maha Kumbhamela occurs once in 144 years. The first 12 days of Godavari pushkaram is called aadhi pushkaram and the last 12 days of Godavari pushkaram is called anthya pushkaram.

These 24 days of Godavari Pushkaralu are very special to the devotees. During Godavari pushkaram pilgrims from all over the country will have a holy dip with the belief that they would be relieved from all sins and perform rituals to departed souls. It is believed that during pushkaram all deities and rishies take holy dip in Godavari which will enhance one's spritual, mental and physical abilities.

The best place to visit the Godavari pushkaram is Rajahmundry and Kovvur. It is expected that the temple town of Bhadrachalam shall witness over one crore devotees during the 12-day pushkaram event, slated to commence on July 14, 2015.

Rajahmundry, the biggest town in East Godavari, will wear a festive look during Godavari Pushkaralu. The Howrah Chennai railway line passes through the town and has two railway stations called Godavari and Rajamundhry. The bridge across the river is Asia's second largest road cum Rail Bridge. Rajahmundry has a population of about 3 Lakhs, to the left of the river Godavari. Rajamundhry is midway between Chennai and Hyderabad, being about 560 kilometres from Chennai and 520 kilometres from Hyderabad. It is an ancient town where literature flourished. In recent times, it has made its name as a commercial hub also. Godavari Pushkaralu is a time when it is most populated.

In Basara, Telengana, Gyana Saraswathi temple devoted to Goddess Saraswathi is located on the banks of Godavari. A giant size Sivalingam is a special attraction in Rajahmundry. Water is drawn from Godavari to Sivalingam and facilitate pilgrims to take bath under showers.
