What is nakshatra porutham?
Nakshatra porutham is the matching of the nakshatra and rasi of the boy and the the girl, comparing parameters and finding out the probability of a correct matching. This is usually done when the date and details are not available for the boy or the girl. When the nakshatra and rasi is known, the 10 porutham for marriage matching report can be prepared.
Ideally, the date, time and place of birth of the boy and the girl is filled in to generate individual horoscopes or natal charts. These natal charts or the jathagam kattam are compared reference to rasi and nakshatra, to identify the number of matching poruthams. Generally, the check is for dina porutham, gana porutham, rasi porutham, yoni porutham and rajju porutham. The above mentioned poruthams are supposed to be the most important poruthams for a smooth sailing marriage. Considering this aspect, if one of these poruthams do not match, the marriage is not considered.
The nakshatra porutham can create a report with the 10 porutham matching. But, on the other hand, the report cannot indicate any dosham in the jathagam matching, such as sevvai dosham, dosha samyam, dasa sandhi, which are also major factors that may affect the marriage positively or negatively.
So, even though nakshatra porutham may be used in exceptional cases, in addition to the nakshatra matching, people make use of the prasna jothidam to identify any ill effects in the porutham matching, when the rasi porutham or nakshatra porutham is found to be matching.
