What are Karnataka Festivals?

Sacred celebrations rooted in ancient Kannada traditions that bring communities together

Seasonal Celebrations

Karnataka festivals follow the traditional Hindu lunisolar calendar and mark important astronomical events, seasonal changes, and harvest cycles celebrated across the state of Karnataka.

Mythological Significance

Each festival commemorates sacred events from Hindu scriptures, honoring deities like Vishnu, Shiva, Rama, Krishna, and Chamundeshwari through ancient rituals and devotional practices.

Cultural Unity

Festivals like Ugadi, Dasara, Deepavali, Ganesha Chaturthi, and Karnataka Rajyotsava unite millions of Kannada-speaking people across the world in joyous celebration and devotion.

Festivals of Karnataka - A Rich Cultural Heritage

Karnataka, one of the most culturally diverse states of India, celebrates a vibrant array of festivals that reflect its rich heritage and deep-rooted traditions. The Kannada-speaking people of Karnataka observe festivals that span across Hindu, Muslim, Christian, and Jain traditions, making the state a true mosaic of cultural celebrations throughout the year.

Ugadi - The Kannada New Year

Ugadi carries a special place among festivals in Karnataka, as it observes the start of the new year in the Kannada calendar. For the people of Karnataka, Ugadi symbolises the beginning of the New Year as per the Hindu calendar. Ugadi is known for its distinctive rites, such as preparing a certain dish called "Bevu-Bella," which represents life's sweet and bitter experiences. The mixture of neem flowers (bitter) and jaggery (sweet) signifies that life brings both joy and sorrow. Families also listen to the Panchanga Shravana - the reading of the new year's almanac by a priest - and decorate their homes with mango leaf festoons.

Mysore Dasara

Mysore Dasara is one of the most magnificent festivals in Karnataka, a splendid event that showcases the state's royal history and vibrant culture. Celebrated over ten days with grand parades, artistic performances, and spiritual rituals, Dasara in Mysore is world-renowned. The highlight is the grand Jamboo Savari procession where the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried atop a decorated elephant through the illuminated streets of Mysore. The Mysore Palace is lit up with nearly 100,000 bulbs, creating a spectacular sight that attracts tourists from across the globe.

Deepavali

Deepavali is honoured with great spirit across Karnataka, with homes and temples decorated with lamps and rangoli, representing the triumph of light over darkness. It has deep spiritual value, as people conduct Lakshmi Pooja to gather the blessings of the goddess of prosperity. In Karnataka, Deepavali celebrations have a unique charm with the preparation of traditional sweets like Chiroti and Holige, and the bursting of firecrackers fills the air with festive joy.

Karnataka Rajyotsava

Karnataka Rajyotsava, celebrated on November 1st, marks the formation of the state of Karnataka and is a day of immense pride for all Kannadigas. The red and yellow Karnataka flag flutters across the state, cultural programs showcase the richness of Kannada literature, music, and dance, and the prestigious Rajyotsava Awards are conferred on distinguished citizens for their contributions to various fields.
