Holi is a festival of colours, occuring in the spring time, celebrated mostly in the northern parts of India. It is an age old festival which has also become popular in many parts of South Asia, involving people from all communities.
It is a festival that is celebrated in India, Nepal and all over where Indians or people of Indian origin are in significant numbers. The festival has also spread to Europe and North America as a festival that celebrates love, full of frolic and definitely a colourful one.
Holi celebrations generally begin with a Holika bonfire on the night before Holi. People gather around, with a lot of song and dance to go about. The next day begins wit a frolic of colours, where it is a free for all for everyone to throw colours at each other using colour powders and sometimes coloured water. People then visit family and friends, play with colours and gift Holi special food amongst themselves.
