Thiruvonam or Onam was celebrated by ancient Tamil people in Tamilakam (Tamil Country), in veneration of Lord Mahavishnu, dating way back to the Sangam period. Onam has many accounts in Sangam literature.
Onam is the harvest festival celebrated by the people of Kerala and Tamil nadu. It is celebrated grandly in Kerala with 4 state declared holidays, beginning Onam eve (Uthradom) to the 4th Onam day. Onam festival falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug-Sep) and marks the commemoration of Vamana avatara of Vishnu. It is believed that on the day of Thiruvonam, the King Mahabali returns to his land to see his citizens.
In Kerala, Onam is celebrated with an array of cultural celebrations such as Vallam Kali, Pulikkali, Pookkalam, Onatthappan, Thumbi Thullal, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula.
