Vaikunta Ekadasi
There is no better mantra than the Gayathri, there is no better fasting than Ekadasi, is a saying in Tamil.
This portrays the power of the Ekadasi Vratham in a nutshell. This powerful day occurs on the 11th day after the new moon day or the full moon day. Fasting on each of these Ekadasi days is supposed to bring in different results for the devotee.
The benefits of Ekadasi fasting
Fasting on Ekadasi on Chithirai month will bring in all that you seek. In the Vaikasi month, it brings in the benefit of having visited Kailas and Badrinath. In the month of Adi, the blessings of having provided food for the poor. Ekadasi fasting on Aavani, blessed one with children; sick children are healed and regain their health.
Purattaasi brings you peaceful life. Aippasi brings you all wealth. Karthigai brings in happiness. Thai removes curses from the ancestors and brings in their blessings. Masi removes all sins and blemishes in life. Panguni removes all obstacles and makes you victorious. There are people who fast on all Ekadasis. The fasting starts on Ekadasi and they break their fasting the next day morning after peforming the austerities for the supreme being.
The best Ekadasi is supposed to be the Ekadasi that happens on the month of Margazhi. Like we have day and night alternately, the Devas too have day and night. 6 months of human time is equivalent to one day or night for the Devas. So, it is night time or Dakshinayana for the Devas from the month of Adi to Marghazhi. Similarly, the 6 months between Thai and Aani is one Deva day.
The early morning period before sunrise is called Brahma muhurtham. It is a time when the Devas visit Earth and bless the people who are performing austerties and/or immersed in prayer.
For the Devas, the month of Marghazi is the equivalent of the Brahma muhurhtham for man. This is the reason for the festivities of the Marghazhi season. The Ekadasi tithi on the month of Marghazhi commands a special mention. It is also called the Vaikunda Ekadasi. It is believed to be the time when Mahavishnu wakes up from his sleep and praying Him during this time will bring in all good for the devotee.
Mahavishnu created Muran from his body to destroy the demon Muran.
It is on this day that Mohini destroyed Muran. Those who pray the Lord on this day are promised a place in Vaikunta. Those that cannot fast on all the Ekadasis, may fast on Vaikunta Ekadasi. The fasting starts on the Dasami tithi, when they will eat only once the entire day.
On the day of Ekadasi, it is ideal that no food is consumed. Those that cannot fast completely may eat milk and fruits offered for the Lord. Prayers and chantings of Vishnu sahasranama and vishnu songs may be performed. Early in the morning, the paramapatha entrance in the Vishnu temples will be opened. It is said that those that are able to go through the paramapatha entrance are blessed ones. That night people chant prayers and play the parama padham game, to prevent themselves going asleep.
The next day, on the Dwadasi, special prayers are offered with 21 different varieties of food for to the Lord, before breaking the fast. It is the belief of the bhakthas that fasting on the day of Vaikaunta Ekadasi blesses one with the effect of having fasted 3 crore times on Ekadasi.
