The kanjanoor temple is located around 18 km from Kumbakonam and 2 km to the east fromSooriyanayanar Kovil, on the Kallanai - Poompuhar road, in Tamilnadu.
The presiding deities of Agniswara Swami Temple is Lord Shivaand Goddess Parvathi.
It is said that Lord Brahma was blessed with a vision of Shiva's marriage with Parvathi here.
Another important feature is that the Oil Abishekam performed to the main Siva linga is fully absorbed by the idol.
This shrine is also referred to as Palaasavanam, Bhrammapuri, Agnistalam and Neelakudi.
Kanjanur is the sthalam for sukaran navagraha temples. Agni is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here and hence the name Agneeswarar.As per the Temple story (Sthala Purana), Lord Brahma was blessed with a vision of Shiva's marriage with Parvathy here. The Brahma Lingam enshrined in this Temple is said to have been worshipped by Lord Brahma himself. There is no separate sannidhi (shrine) for Lord Sukra as Lord Shiva himself is believed to have incarnated as Venus here.
The presiding deity Agneeswarar is the embodiment of sukaran navagraha temples. Sukrachariar was the Guru of asuras. He had got the blessings from Lord Siva after severe penances. In the Vamana Avataram of Lord Vishnu, Vamana sought three foot steps of land from Mahabali, an asura king. Realising Vamana to be no mere mortal, Sukrachariyar assumed the form of a bee and tried to block the flow of water from the kamandalam. Vamana picking up a pavithram blinds Sukracharya in one eye while trying to unclog the hole in the kamandalam.
