Nandhi, the bull vehicle of Lord Shiva, that once turned the other side to prevent floods destroying the place, is still in the same position facing the entrance of the temple. This is the birth place of celebrated saints Kalikamba Nayanar and Meikandar. Also Saint Maraignana Sambandar in the Saivite Guru tradition lived here. There are three windows around the sanctum sanctorum which facilitates darshan of the Lord from all sides. The world was once destroyed by Lord Shiva.
