Those frustrated with their fate in life and seeking mental peace, salvation and those seeking ranks in education, family prosperity, cure from diseases and for relief from adverse aspects of Mars planet-Sevvai in Tamil and Mangal in Hindi, pray in the temple for solutions. Demon Mahishasura had the boon that he should not be killed by a woman born from the womb of a mother. With the strength of this boon, he began to harass and torture Devas. They appealed to Lord Shiva for protection. Lord asked Ambica to take up this job. Ambica produced seven Sakthis from Her-Brahmmi, Mahaswari, Goumari, Vaishnavi, Vaarahi, Indrani and Chamundi. They destroyed demon Mahishasura. They sought the blessing of Lord Shiva to cleanse themselves of the dosha incurred by them for killing the demon. Lord Shiva asked them to go Bhooloka-Earth and worship Him and assured that He would give them the relief at an appropriate time. He also sent Veerabadra for their security. Lord Shiva granted the relief and made them security deities for Shakti-Ambica in Shiva temples. Based on this story, the Saptha Kannikas act as directed by their Guru Lord Dakshinamurthi. This is a rare feature in this temple. Lord Dakshinamurthy is praised in this temple as Kanni Guru.
